Who gets the sign on bonus?

A few weeks ago I was speaking at a small rural hospital in Tribune, Kansas. (While I love presenting to huge metropolitan hospitals, some of my greatest events are in small rural communities.) After my presentation, as department heads and I were brainstorming recruitment and retention strategies, the CEO said, “I gave my first sign on bonus today.” As I quizzed him about their policy on paying recruits to sign up, he quickly said, “No, no, we don’t do that. We gave the bonus to the staff member who recruited that nurse after she had been here one year.” He went on to explain that he felt giving money to lure people to come was “sending the wrong message.” A great idea: giving the “sign on bonus” to the staff member who recruited the new employee.

What great ideas do you have?
