Violence in the Workplace? Surely Not Nurses!

Written by LeAnn Thieman, CSP, August 12th, 2009

bullyI’ve been reading more about a new phrase “lateral violence” in the workplace. I resisted believing that the words violence and nurses could be in the same sentence.

But I have to admit that there is sometimes disruptive, unkind, bullying behavior.

When I give presentations to help with nurse recruitment and retention, I refuse to repeat and reinforce the phrase, “Nurses eat their young.” But that is exactly what lateral violence is all about.

60% of new nurse leave their jobs because of this. 20% leave the profession forever.

We all need to take reponsibility for having a zero-tolerance for this is our workplaces. If we witness it, let’s commit to calling attention to and resolving it. Then nurses won’t have to quit. We can ease the nursing shortage. For more proven ideas, contact me.
