Need More Nurses as Nurse Navigators

Written by LeAnn Thieman, CSP, August 16th, 2011

More and more hospitals are utilizing nurse navigators to help steer patients through the medical system maze, especially in cancer treatments. At no added charge, navigators help patients make informed decisions, set up doctor appointments, arrange tests etc. Nurse navigators help dealing with chemotherapy and help them stay on track while offering emotional support.

Studies show that navigation services increase patient participation in cancer screening and adherence to followup care.

The Commission on Cancer, part of the American College of Surgeons, issued new standards this year requiring cancer centers to offer patient-navigator services by 2015 to meet accreditation requirements.

With the nursing shortage crisis looming, this information supports plans to recruit nurses for future patient care needs.
