Engage Nurses to Retain Nurses

nursecolor3I had the privilege of presenting 2 sessions at the Press Ganey National Client conference in Washington D.C. last week. I was thrilled that attendees benefited so from my Each One Reach One Nurse session ,where I shared over 150 tips on recruiting and retaining nurses, and they brainstormed even more!

As an expert in nurse recruitment and retention, I’m constantly researching and learning more on these issues. This conference was superb, a plethora of information!

I was eager to learn more about employee partnering to increase dedication and retention. Dedicated staff stay longer, reducing turnover. Dedicated staff deliver better patient care.

Based on data from hospitals across the country, instead of cutting staff to curtail costs, now is the time to create lasting partnerships with employees. Emotionally engaged employees are more likely to stay.

Millions of Jobs in Healthcare!

stethascopeWhile many jobs were lost last year, jobs in health care fields actually increased. Over the last eight years, of the 3 million new jobs in the private sector, 2.5 million of those were related to health care.

Experts agree this trend will continue. And the good news is, health care jobs can’t be outsourced like those in manufacturing or other fields. Those in the health care field are going to be jobs that stay in the United States and add to the economy.

In my Each One Reach One Nurse initiative, I remind nurses to advocate nursing as a great career. Even though some places have temporary hiring freezes, the nursing shortage still exists. All of us nurses need to be forward thinkers and help to end the shortage of tomorrow by helping to recruit and retain nurses today.

From Novice to Expert

award1As a nurse motivational speaker, I had the grand privilege of presenting at Avera Health’s Nursing Conference in South Dakota last week. The highlight of the event was the award ceremony at the end. One award that stood out for me was the Novice to Expert award. This award honors a nurse who has practiced for less than three years. The nominee must demonstrate clinical leadership and contribute energy, commitment, and enthusiasm to the profession.

Mentoring new nurses is one of the key strategies in my Each One Reach One Nurse initiative. 20% of first year nurses quit! With the nursing shortage facing this nation, we cannot afford that. Mentoring a new nurse is a great investment.

I’ve done a lot of research about for my new keynote, What is This Generation Coming To? Coping with Generational Differences in the Workplace. Experts know that the “young” millennial require more attention the first year on the job, yet they are eager to learn and grow as a nurse and as a person. Giving them proper mentoring results in a long term, committed employee, one eligible for the Novice to Expert award.

Should You Bathe Your Patients?

bathBecause nurses are so busy doing high-tech care, sometimes we delegate the bathing of patients to nursing assistants. (what would we do without them?!) Yet, by doing so we are missing important opportunities to assess our patients.

Helping patients with personal hygiene lets nurses use all their assessment, observational and communication skills. We discover how well the patient can coordinate their actions, mentally process what they are told, and how they express themselves. It is a great opportunity to assess patient’s skin integrity and physical state. It is also the best way to learn the early signs of clinical problems.

Equally important. bathing people shows them we have time for them. It helps build trust and the nurse-patient therapeutic relationship as much as medicines or other clinical interventions. Helping a patient bathe is one of the most fundamental and crucial skills available to nurses, regardless of initials behind their names.

When, as a nurse motivational speaker, I help hospitals recruit and retain their nurses, I often hear from staff that they are so busy doing technical care, they miss doing the personal care. To retain nurses, we need to allow them to incorporate high touch with high tech.

Who are Your Role Models?

nurseThis is the first time in the history of our country that we have 4 generations of nurses all working together. In creating my new keynote, What’s This Generation Coming To? I’ve learned enormous amounts about how we “seasoned” nurses can help retain the “new” ones.

Considering that 20% of first year nurses quit, we need to retain nurses by serving as role models and mentors for them. Contrary to many assumptions, the “millennial” generation is eager to learn from us; they are looking for role models.

As a nurse motivational speaker, I remind nurses that we are always role modeling, whether we want to or not. When we role model compassionate, positive, comprehensive care, we are teaching.  Who are your facility’s role models? Are you a good role model?
