Home down payment?

Written by LeAnn Thieman, CSP, May 29th, 2009

Recently I learned of a hospital that offered a down payment on a home as a recruitment incentive. I began to wonder if this could be an award for years of service to a hospital too. Perhaps, $10,000 for 5 yr commitment. Is that a good nurse retention tip? Would it make you stay longer on the job?

It’s amazing what people will do for a flar screen TV. It seems to be the most coveted gifts for prizes and giveaways. Some hospitals off one as a hiring incentive. Maybe we should offer them as a “prize” for a certain number of years service. This may be a great nurse recruitment AND retention tip. Would you stay longer for a flate screen TV?

How hard do we try to keep our nurses?

Only 13% of workers say their employers put effort into keeping them on their jobs. During Nurses Week time and money are invested in making nurses feel appreciated. Maybe this is a good time to think of all the ways we could put forth more effort all year long. Maybe we can use the same strategies from nurses week and apply them more consistently throughout the year. How many the nurses we could “save” with a little more effort toward nurse retention?
