Mentor the Novice Nurse

Written by LeAnn Thieman, CSP, March 14th, 2009

Twenty-percent of first year nurses quit! So more hospitals are investing in longer, more thorough residency programs. One is the Versant RN Residency, which was developed at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles and since 2004 has spread to 70 other hospitals nationwide. One hospital noted its turnover rate reduced from 22% to 10% in 18 months since starting the program.

We need a National Nurse

There is a large grassroots movement calling for legislation that would create an Office of the National Nurse, promoting the current Chief Nurse Officer of the U.S. Public Health Service to the National Nurse. This would be a position increased to full time within the Office of the Surgeon General. This would promote health at a national level and surely give nursing the needed attention, to help ease the shortage and increase recruitment and retention.
