What are Senior Nursing Students looking for in their first job?

Written by LeAnn Thieman, CSP, February 4th, 2009

I had the honor of speaking to seniors in the Colorado University nursing program. When I asked them, “What is the most important thing you are looking for in your first job,” one student raised her hand and said,”Good work environment.” When I asked her to explain she said, “Some place where they take care of me.” Other students chimed in agreeing. “Where they help me.” “Where they treat me good..help me learn..don’t crticize me too much.” “Where they let me have a life besides work.” “Where they give me the time I need to take the best care of my patients.”

These seem like reasonable requests. Let’s all commit to halting the statistic that 20% of first year nurses quit.
